Dentures and Children

We often get questions from families about dentures for children, so we wanted to share some helpful guidance.

When should children have dentures?
We advise that dentures are made before starting school (around age 4–5). This can make a big difference with:

  • Eating more comfortably
  • Speech development
  • Confidence and helping to avoid bullying

In some cases, dentures can be made as young as 3 years old. If you’re being told otherwise or are facing challenges accessing care, please get in touch with us — we’re here to help you navigate this.

X-rays for young children
You can request dental X-rays from around 2–2.5 years old. For this purpose, it is completely justified and can help with planning the best care.

Top vs bottom dentures
It’s often recommended to start with the top set of dentures first, as they are generally:

  • Easier to keep in place
  • Easier for children to get used to

A helpful tip
When changing dentures in the bathroom, fill the sink with water first. This way, if they are dropped, they’re much less likely to break.
